In many states, including Georgia, medical costs in workers' compensation claims often comprise the bulk of a claim's expense. Moreover, the manner in which an employer or insurer provide medical benefits is a critical factor in maintaining costs and minimizing lost time claims. Consequently, it is incumbent upon those professionals involved in the process of handling work-related injuries (including workers' compensation managers, human resource and benefits professionals, safety and compliance managers, supervisors, business owners, etc.) to be well-versed in the basic rules for providing medical care under Georgia's Workers' Compensation Act. Thus, the goal of this teleconference is to outline the steps for effectively administering the provision of medical benefits to injured employees while avoiding the common pitfalls that can lead to spiraling medical costs. Failing to have a proper posted panel of physicians is one of the most common errors employers make in handing workers' compensation claims, so the teleconference will begin with this topic. We will then discuss methods for effectively utilizing the provision of medical benefits to minimize (or eliminate) lost time claims while controlling medical costs. Any employer interested in controlling medical costs and avoiding lost time claims will benefit from this teleconference.
